Australian dry gardens are not simply gardens that receive less water. A real dry garden is shaped by heat, wind, soil, slope, rainfall, runoff, frost, summer stress and the way water moves through it after every rare downpour.

At Sylvaterre Native Nursery, we grow plants in one of the best testing grounds a dry garden could ask for. Sylvaterre sits between Pyramid Hill and Mitiamo on Sylvaterre Ridge, adjacent to Mount Terrick Terrick in northern Victoria. From here, we can watch rain sweep across the northern plains, darken the sky over Pyramid Hill, then split before it reaches us. Usually the rain follows the ancient watercourses and leaves Sylvaterre almost dry, but sometimes the sky fills with heavy cloud and the rain has nowhere else to go. Forced upward by Mount Terrick Terrick, the clouds finally release their payload, and the water comes down so fast and heavily that it flows across the surface of our hard-baked land like a single sheet.

That experience changes the way that we plant and the types of plants that we grow.

The best plants for Australian dry gardens are not just “drought tolerant” on a label. They are plants that can establish, recover, flower, shelter wildlife and keep contributing to the garden when the weather becomes hard.

Why Australian Dry Gardens Need More Than Tough Plants

A dry garden begins with observation.

Before choosing plants, look at:

  • where rain naturally runs
  • where water disappears too quickly
  • which parts of the garden bake in summer
  • where wind strips moisture from leaves and soil
  • where frost settles
  • where shade moves through the day
  • where soil is compacted, cracked, sandy, clay-heavy or hydrophobic

At Sylvaterre, the first lesson was simple: rainfall averages are useful, but they do not describe a property. A town 14 km away can receive rain that never reaches your fence. A slope can shed water before roots can use it. A ploughed paddock uphill can interrupt natural runoff. A dry wind from inland can undo a light shower before lunchtime.

Best Shrubs for Australian Dry Gardens

Shrubs are the bones of a dry garden. They create shelter, structure, shade, flowers, food and safe movement for wildlife.

A good dry garden needs shrubs of different heights, densities and flowering seasons. Some should be open and floral. Others should be dense, quiet and protective.

Eremophila: The Main Course of Dry Garden Shrubs

Eremophila are among the most important plants for Australian dry gardens. Their name loosely means “desert lover”, but the genus is far more diverse than that simple translation suggests.

Some Eremophila are groundcovers. Some become small trees. Some have glossy green foliage and masses of flowers. Others have thick, furry silver leaves and flowers so abundant they seem almost equal to the foliage. Flower shapes range from tubular and trumpet-like to cup-shaped, spotted, starry or multi-staged.

Many flower for long periods, and many are especially valuable because their flower structure is less easily dominated by feral honey bees. That can leave more nectar available for smaller native pollinators and honeyeaters.

Saltbush, Rhagodia and Other Dryland Structure Plants

Dry gardens need plants that can handle reflected heat, dry soil, wind and lean conditions. Saltbushes and related plants such as Rhagodia are excellent choices because they bring structure, foliage colour and habitat value without needing constant attention.

Grey, silver and blue-green foliage is especially useful in dry gardens because it visually cools the planting. It also pairs beautifully with Eremophila, native daisies, pigface, grasses and small trees.

Plants such as Hedge Saltbush can help create that essential dry garden middle layer: not a tree, not a groundcover, but the living framework that turns scattered plants into a garden.

The local variety of Hedge Saltbush is a Wild & Rampant plant with thorn-like structures inside its branches, it grows over rocks, fallen branches and small shrubs. People think that it looks ugly and messy in my gardens but I don’t care because my gardens aren’t for people. My gardens are for wildlife and the small birds and large reptiles think that the ‘wild and rampant’ messy hedge saltbush is a habitat garden superstar. I don’t sell our local variety online because it doesn’t suit an urban garden, the variant that we sell online is a cultivar with a more controllable growing habit.

Correa for Tough, Sheltered Positions

Not every dry garden position is open desert. Some dry spots are partly shaded, wind-protected or under larger plants. Correa can be ideal in those places.

Local and hardy Correa forms bring dense foliage, nectar-rich flowers and excellent small bird value. The right Correa can soften a dry garden without turning it into a high-water garden.

At Sylvaterre, local Rock Correa has been useful in dry, structured plantings where shelter, nectar and resilience all matter.

Best Groundcovers for Australian Dry Gardens

Groundcovers do far more than cover bare soil. In a dry garden, they help regulate temperature, slow evaporation, protect soil life and create low habitat.

Pigface and Native Succulent Groundcovers

Native pigface species such as Carpobrotus rossii and Disphyma crassifolium are excellent dry garden plants. They store water in fleshy leaves, tolerate sun and wind, and provide bright flowers for beneficial insects.

They are useful for:

  • banks
  • rockeries
  • retaining walls
  • dry borders
  • coastal gardens
  • verge plantings
  • large pots
  • erosion-prone areas

They also bring a food plant element into the garden, with edible leaves or fruit depending on the species.

Prostrate Myoporum

Prostrate forms of Myoporum insulare, commonly known as Coastal Boobialla, are useful where a tough, spreading plant is needed to cover ground, stabilise slopes and provide habitat.

They can work beautifully in dry gardens with pigface, saltbush, Rhagodia, native grasses and low Eremophila forms.

Wildflowers for Dry Gardens

Dry gardens do not need to be grey, sparse or harsh. With the right plant choices, they can be rich with seasonal flowers and native insect activity.

Chocolate Lily

Chocolate Lily, Arthropodium strictum, is one of the great native wildflowers for Australian dry gardens. It has broad grass-like foliage and tall purple flower spikes that can reach up to around 1.5 metres high in strong plants. The flowers have a rich chocolate fragrance, and the dark purple/brown and cream anthers contrast beautifully with the mauve-purple petals.

At Sylvaterre, Chocolate Lilies are allowed to follow their natural rhythm. When they finish flowering, we stop watering and let them die back. They return the following year larger, stronger and often more fragrant. Sometimes new seedlings appear in the pots.

Blue Banded Bees love them. We have watched these bees land on Chocolate Lily flowers, hug the pollen-rich stamens and vibrate to shake pollen loose. That kind of moment is why dry gardens should never be thought of as lifeless.

Native Daisies

Native daisies are perfect companions in dry gardens. They bring colour, pollen, softness and movement, especially between tougher shrubs and grasses.

Good choices can include Chrysocephalum, Xerochrysum, Olearia and other hardy native daisy forms. Lechenaultia for High-Impact Colour

Lechenaultia can bring extraordinary colour to dry native gardens, especially in pots, raised beds, rockeries and well-positioned garden pockets.

They are not always the simplest plants in every soil, but for gardeners willing to give them the right position, their floral display is worth the attention.

Dry Garden Trees and First-Generation Repair Plants

When Australians think of tough dry country trees, they often think of Eucalyptus, Corymbia, Acacia and Ironwood. They are right to do so, but the trick is choosing the right tree for the job.

At Sylvaterre, some of the first major plantings included Red Flowering Ironbark and Wirilda. Red Flowering Ironbark was chosen for speed, toughness, frost and drought resistance, and its future value to insects, skinks, geckos, honeyeaters, lorikeets and parrots. Wirilda was chosen because it grows quickly, handles compacted clay loam and helps repair the soil while creating wind protection and habitat.

That is what a first-generation repair plant should do.

It may not be the final, slow-growing, 100-year tree. It may be the plant that makes the future garden possible.

Why Tubestock Can Fail in Harsh Dry Gardens

Tubestock has many advantages. It is economical, easy to ship and often establishes well in prepared sites. But in very harsh dry gardens, tubestock can fail quickly if planted straight into hard, exposed ground.

At Sylvaterre, many early tubestock plantings failed. The ground was harder and more compacted than expected. Water ran off too quickly. The wind dried young plants faster than their roots could adjust.

That changed the way we plant.

For difficult sites, we now prefer to grow small plants on in pots for a year or two before planting them out. Trees are grown in larger bags for several years before they face the open ground. Bigger plants with stronger root systems establish faster and cope better with the first brutal summer.

This does not mean tubestock is wrong. It means site preparation matters.

The Best Dry Garden Technique: Make the Water Stay Longer

In dry gardens, water often arrives in a rush and leaves before plants can use it.

The goal is not always to add more water. Often, it is to slow the water down.

At Sylvaterre, we now change the micro-landscape around new plants. We create shallow depressions uphill from planting sites and small berms on the downhill side. We use light mulch and local rocks to slow runoff, help water soak deeper and create immediate habitat for invertebrates.

This has changed the garden in unexpected ways. Larger planting holes and more friable soil have helped Pobblebonks shelter through the relentless dry months. These frogs move uphill during heavy rain, against the waterflow. Before the soil was improved, they would retreat downhill as the ground dried. Now they can bury into protected soil and wait out summer.

That is what good dry garden design does. It helps plants, but it also helps everything that depends on the plants.

Do Not Mulch Deeply: Plant Living Mulch Instead

Deep mulch is not always the answer in Australian dry gardens.

A thick layer of mulch can look tidy, but it may also separate the soil from the living plants that should be helping it. At Sylvaterre, we prefer light mulch with local rocks, native grasses and groundcovers.

Native grasses are especially valuable around shrubs and trees because they:

  • reduce bare soil
  • slow evaporation
  • suppress weeds
  • add habitat
  • support insects
  • create shelter for small wildlife
  • help hold moisture below the surface

The water those grasses use is often water that would otherwise be lost to evaporation. Their roots help create a living, breathing soil layer around young shrubs and trees.

Dead branches and old shrub trunks also belong in habitat gardens. They create shelter, feed fungi and invertebrates, and eventually return organic matter to the soil.

A dry garden should not be a museum display with plants sitting in empty mulch. It should be alive at ground level.

Safe Shelter Turns Wildlife Visitors into Residents

A wildlife garden needs three things:

  • food
  • water
  • safe shelter

Water may bring birds in. Flowers may bring them back. But safe shelter is what convinces them to stay.

When the first bird bath went in at Sylvaterre, the number and variety of birds increased within days. Most were visiting for water before returning to nearby roadside or national park habitat. The resident birds noticed every outsider. King Willy, the resident wagtail, was especially vigilant.

That experience made something obvious: water attracts wildlife, but shelter creates habitat.

Small birds like Fairy Wrens need dense shrubs with branches and foliage down to the ground. They also benefit from native grasses growing up through the shelter. Many prefer nesting sites that are not covered in nectar-rich spring flowers, because nectar draws larger, noisier birds into the same space.

This is why dry gardens should include quiet, dense, protective shrubs, not only showy flowers.

How Online Nurseries Changed Australian Native Gardens

For much of modern Australian gardening history, the plants available to home gardeners were shaped by what retail nurseries could grow quickly, cheaply and reliably.
