About Us

Welcome to Sylvaterre, your gateway to the rich botanical heritage of Australia. Nestled on the side of Mt. Terrick Terrick, our nursery was born out of a passion for restoring native habitats and revitalizing the land. Our story began on a 1.2-hectare former school site, surrounded by agricultural land and overrun with feral grasses and weeds. It was the cheapest habitable house within 300km of Melbourne when I purchased it, but it held the promise of something beautiful.

Over the years, we transformed this neglected property into a thriving oasis that mirrors Australia before 1770. Through relentless weeding, thousands of dollars invested in plants, and the construction of a rabbit, cat, and fox-resistant fence, we have created a sanctuary for more than 60 species of birds, goannas, legless lizards, blind snakes, skinks, and dragons. Our efforts have paid off, and today, Sylvaterre is a haven for wildlife and a testament to the power of perseverance and love for the land.

Our Unique Mission

At Sylvaterre, we are not just a nursery – we are custodians of Australia’s botanical legacy. Our mission is to propagate, protect, and promote the diverse array of Australian Native Plants that have adapted to some of the world’s harshest conditions. We believe that every plant has a story to tell, a legacy to preserve, and a role to play in our ecosystem. Our commitment extends beyond selling plants; it’s about fostering a deep connection between people and the natural world around them.

Celebrating Biodiversity

We take immense pride in our focus on native food plants and heirloom species. These hidden treasures of Australia’s botanical history have sustained indigenous communities for generations and held a special place in our landscapes. By offering these plants, we aim to celebrate their unique flavors and cultural significance while contributing to their preservation and revival.
