Enchylaena tomentosa
Common Name: Ruby Saltbush
Description
Enchylaena tomentosa, or Ruby Saltbush, is a resilient, low-growing shrub that can reach between 20–80cm in height, with a spreading or upright form. Its bluish-green to dark-green leaves shift to a silvery hue in summer, with lower leaves developing unique red tips in the local variant grown on our property. Tiny greenish flowers bloom from spring to summer, followed by an abundance of edible berries that transition from green to yellow, then mature to a brilliant ruby red, adding year-round visual interest to any landscape.
Habitat and Growing Conditions
Ruby Saltbush occurs widely across inland and coastal regions, showcasing remarkable adaptability to saline soils, saltmarshes, and sand dunes. Thriving in both full sun and part shade, it tolerates poor soils, drought, and frost, making it well-suited to Australia’s semi-arid and coastal environments. On our saltbush-rich property, it establishes so readily that we sometimes repot vigorous plants that outgrow their spaces and offer them for sale after successful establishment in containers.
Ecological and Habitat Value
An essential element in a well-balanced habitat garden, Ruby Saltbush supports a wide range of wildlife. Singing Honeyeaters are frequent visitors, squeezing the berries to enjoy their juice, and nearly every creature in the garden benefits from its presence, whether for food or shelter. Its ability to crowd out invasive species like Wild Oats, Barley Grass, and Brome Grass makes it a valuable ally in maintaining native landscapes and promoting biodiversity.
Landscaping Uses
The low-maintenance, hardy nature of Ruby Saltbush makes it an ideal choice for habitat gardens, coastal plantings, and any landscape that seeks to mimic Australia’s natural ecosystems. Its changing foliage and colorful berries add subtle beauty, while its fire-retardant properties provide an added layer of safety in arid regions. Ruby Saltbush can serve as ground cover or an accent plant in mixed beds, contributing to weed control and adding visual depth with its silvery and ruby tones.
Care and Maintenance
Enchylaena tomentosa is exceptionally low-maintenance, thriving in most soil types with minimal care. Simply ensure it has access to sun or partial shade, and it will reward you with its resilience and ecological benefits. Occasional pruning may be needed to keep it within bounds, but this hardy shrub will persist through challenging conditions, contributing beauty and function to your landscape.
