Austral Storksbill – Pelargonium australe

Pelargonium australe, commonly known as Austral Storksbill, Austral Stork’s-bill, native storksbill or wild geranium, is a charming Australian native perennial with soft rounded foliage and delicate white flowers marked with distinctive magenta blotches. It has a natural cottage-garden quality while still being tough enough for dry, well-drained native gardens, rockeries, borders, pots, informal wildflower plantings and habitat-focused gardens.

This adaptable native Pelargonium is found naturally across much of Australia in coastal and inland habitats, including dunes, coastal cliffs, rocky places, open woodland edges and well-drained sites. In the garden it is useful where a soft, flowering native perennial is needed for low-water plantings, mixed native borders and wildlife-friendly spaces.

Pelargonium australe should not be confused with the pink-flowered Pelargonium rodneyanum. Austral Storksbill produces white flowers with magenta markings, giving it a lighter, more delicate appearance in the garden.

Flowers

Pelargonium australe produces delicate white flowers with distinctive magenta blotches and markings on the petals. Flowering is often strongest from spring through summer, with sporadic flowers possible at other times depending on seasonal conditions.

The flowers sit above the foliage on slender stems and bring a light, informal feel to native garden beds. They combine beautifully with native daisies, grasses, blue-flowering perennials, silver foliage plants and small shrubs.

Foliage and Growth Habit

The foliage is soft, rounded, gently lobed and often slightly hairy, giving the plant a pleasant texture and natural look. Plants usually form a low mound or spreading perennial clump, making them useful at the front of garden beds, along path edges, in rockeries or in pots.

Austral Storksbill is generally compact and easy to place among other native plants. It works well in informal plantings where its soft foliage can contrast with fine native grasses, daisy foliage, succulents and tougher dryland shrubs.

Traditional Food and Medicinal Uses

Pelargonium australe has additional cultural and ethnobotanical value. The plant produces edible carrot-like tubers, and the leaves have been used medicinally by Indigenous Australians. These traditional uses add to its value as a native food and medicine plant, as well as an ornamental and habitat plant.

As with all edible or medicinal native plants, only use material that has been correctly identified and grown without chemical treatment. Medicinal use should be approached with care and appropriate cultural, botanical and health guidance.

Cultivation

Soil:

Best grown in well-drained soil. Suitable for sandy, gravelly, loamy and lightly clay-based soils where water drains freely. It is a good choice for rockeries, raised beds, dry borders, pots and native garden beds with open soil structure.

Sunlight:

Grows in full sun to part shade. In hot inland gardens, light afternoon shade may help maintain fresher foliage through summer, while brighter positions generally encourage stronger flowering.

Watering:

Water regularly while establishing. Once established, Pelargonium australe is dry tolerant and usually needs little supplementary water except during extended dry periods or when grown in pots.

Frost tolerance:

Frost tolerant once established, especially in well-drained soil. Young plants may benefit from some protection while settling in during their first winter.

Drought tolerance:

Drought tolerant once established. Best performance is achieved in well-drained soil with occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.

Pruning and maintenance:

Trim lightly after flowering or whenever the plant becomes untidy. Removing old flowering stems can help maintain a neater shape and encourage fresh growth. Avoid overwatering and heavy feeding, as this can produce soft growth.

Uses

  • Native wildflower-style perennial for garden beds and borders.
  • Rockeries, raised beds and dry native gardens.
  • Pots, cottage gardens and courtyard plantings.
  • Food and medicine plant collections.
  • Soft foreground planting beneath open shrubs.
  • Habitat gardens for native bees and beneficial insects.
  • Low-water and drought-tolerant garden designs.
  • Useful contrast foliage among native grasses, daisies and small shrubs.

Habitat Value

Pelargonium australe is a useful small habitat plant for native gardens. Its flowers can attract native bees and other beneficial insects, while the low foliage helps create ground-level cover among more open plantings.

It combines well with native daisies, Chrysocephalum, Brachyscome,  small Eremophila forms, Correa and other hardy Australian native perennials.

Growing Tips

Plant in well-drained soil and water through establishment. Avoid positions that remain wet for long periods, especially in cool weather. In hot exposed gardens, part shade may help keep foliage looking fresher through summer.

For containers, use a free-draining native potting mix and choose a pot with good drainage. Trim lightly after flowering to keep the plant compact and encourage fresh growth.
