Persoonia Golden Lantern
Persoonia Golden Lantern, also known as Golden Lantern Geebung, is a beautiful low-growing hybrid geebung with a distinctive combination of bright green lance-shaped foliage, contrasting magenta stems and golden-yellow tubular flowers. It is a hybrid between Persoonia nutans and Persoonia oxycoccoides.
Growing to around 1 metre high and 1.5 metres wide, ‘Golden Lantern’ forms a dense, mounding shrub suitable for dry native gardens, rockeries, low borders, understorey plantings, informal low hedges and large containers. Its small yellow flowers are produced mainly from summer to autumn, with some sources also noting flowering through spring and summer depending on growing conditions.
Like many persoonias, this plant is especially valued for its refined texture and foliage contrast as much as its flowers. The rich green leaves and reddish-magenta stems give it year-round ornamental value, while the golden lantern-like flowers add seasonal colour and nectar for native pollinators.

Cultivation
Soil:

Grow in full sun to dappled shade. Full sun encourages a denser habit and stronger flowering, while light shade may suit hotter inland gardens.
Watering:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, ‘Golden Lantern’ is best treated as a dry-garden shrub, with only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Frost tolerance:
Reported as tolerating moderate frost once established, especially in a well-drained position. Young plants may benefit from protection in colder gardens.
Drought tolerance:
Suited to dry gardens once established, provided drainage is excellent.
Pruning:
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a dense, bushy shape. Avoid hard pruning into old wood.
Fertiliser:
Use a low-phosphorus native fertiliser sparingly in spring if required. Avoid overfeeding.

Habitat Value
Persoonia ‘Golden Lantern’ provides small nectar-rich flowers that are useful to native bees and other pollinating insects. The dense, low habit also provides shelter for small invertebrates and helps create layered structure in habitat-focused native gardens.
The flowers are smaller and less showy than many bird-attracting shrubs, but they add valuable seasonal diversity to native plantings and are especially useful where fine foliage texture and low shrub structure are desired.
Growing Tips
Plant in a sunny to lightly shaded position with excellent drainage. This is the key to long-term success with persoonias. Avoid overwatering, wet feet and dense humid planting situations.
In heavier soils, grow in a raised bed or large pot using a very free-draining native potting mix. Tip-prune lightly when young, then prune after flowering to encourage a dense, mounded habit.
