A spectacular and relatively rare wildflower from the south coast of Western Australia, found between Albany and Esperance, with strong populations in the Fitzgerald River National Park.
Lechenaultia superba is a compact, spreading shrub reaching 50–70 cm high and 50 cm–1 m wide, producing masses of brilliant orange flowers in spring, with additional bursts throughout the year. Despite its delicate appearance, this species is tough and resilient, thriving in well-drained sandy soils and full sun to part shade.

Perfect for native and cottage gardens, pots, and containers, this lechenaultia adds vibrant colour to sunny garden spaces and pairs beautifully with other small Western Australian species.

Flowers

Cultivation

Soil:

Needs occasional watering in hot, dry weather. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, but excessive summer humidity can cause root rot.

Apply a light dose of slow-release native fertiliser in spring to encourage flowering.

Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth.

Growing Tips

Lechenaultias can look delicate but are surprisingly tough in the right conditions. Choose a sunny, well-ventilated position with excellent drainage. In humid or high-rainfall areas, grow as short-lived perennials or annuals in pots using a quality native mix improved with sand or perlite. Remove saucers to prevent root rot.

After planting, water in with a seaweed solution to help establishment.
Lechenaultias dislike heavy soils and excess humidity but reward the right setting with magnificent colour.

Name note:
The genus was named in honour of French botanist Jean-Baptiste Leschenault de la Tour. While both Leschenaultia and Lechenaultia are seen in older references, Lechenaultia (without the “s”) is now the accepted spelling.
